… verses in the bible because it is the it is considered the exact middle verse of all the bible does anybody know which one that is psalm 118 verse 8 is the middle verse of the bible which says this it is better to trust in the lord than to put confidence in man that just sort of sums it all up what paul is saying better to trust in the lord than to put confidence in man. When you trust in man, when you look to man, you will be disappointed by man. So the key is turn away, look away, and look to him. The Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. And verse four, we have confidence in the Lord concerning you. You're going to make it. Paul's confidence isn't so much based on their character, but on whose? God's character. God is able to keep them. As Jude said, he's able to keep you from falling and present you faultless before his throne of glory with exceeding joy. …
… would know the answer to that question. He said, EJ, it's Psalm 118, verse eight. Would you go there? And so I was in my office at this time. So I grabbed my Bible, turned there. He said, EJ, read it to me. I'm like, yes, sir. Yes, sir, Goosey. it is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. He said, if that's not at the center of your life as a Christian, if that's not at the center of every Christian's life, they are missing it. They're missing it. Every act of coveting you and I make is a vote of no confidence in the character of God. We're saying, hey God, you don't know what the best plan for my life is. hey, God, you don't understand what I need and want. But every time you and I are content, every time we're saying, God, thank you for this, it's a declaration, hey, God, you are trustworthy. You are trustworthy. When coveting rises in our hearts, don't nurse it. …
… that we should all be very, very thankful for. It is better to take, this is Psalm 118, it is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. So when you're in the pit, you cry out to God. Now he may use a therapist, a Christian counselor, may use a pastor, may use the Bible. He has a hundred ways to meet you and rescue you, but you call out to him. That's number two. The king's pit, the king's cry, and now thirdly, the king's patient waiting, the king's patience. Verse one, I waited patiently for the Lord. the reason that's so important for us to hear is because waiting I think Marshall's breakout yesterday was on waiting waiting is a huge portion of the Christian life we could wish that answers came as soon as the request was made and they don't they don't come that way usually God's timing is rarely your timing I was a pastor for 33 years and we were always desperate for something something wasn't working come to the end of the year you need a third of your budget in December very typical like oh my goodness four weeks left, need a million dollars and God cancels your first service with a snowstorm like Gideon You got too many Sundays to get a million dollars. …
… But I say to you this night, when you suffer for the cause of Christ or otherwise the Bible says it's better to trust in the Lord than to put your confidence in man. Know that God is always faithful. Man will turn his back on you. Man will lie in your face. Man will point to your mistakes and let you never forget that you made a mistake. But there's only one man that you can trust for sure. He's both human and divine. God incarnate. His name is Jesus. Put your faith in him. He will never leave you nor forsake you. For the Bible says without faith it's impossible to please God. And these Christian Jews were being persecuted by man for their Christian testimony. And they were scattered throughout the Roman Empire. They were torn away from their homes, church. Homes they had lost, jobs they had lost, families they had lost, lost their possessions, and some had lost their lives. And many of these Christian Jews, I liken them to the suffering, to what we see in this nation on a daily basis. Oh yeah, we can brag about how well our economy is doing, but if we listen to the Democratic debate on Thursday, December 19th, we heard loud and clear that our economy is doing well for the rich and the wealthy. However, the middle class and the poverty-stricken are still sinking with each pay period. …
