Sermons on Psalms 139:15

My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. My frame was not hidden from thee, When I was made in secret, And curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

… think about the rest of scripture see the intimacy of Psalm 139 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven. Your eyes saw my unformed substance. You formed my days for me before one of them came to be. God's clearly not relating here to an embryo, but to a person. And his relationship with that person from conception, from the forming of inward parts, is astoundingly intimate. And then you look at the rest of Scripture and you see different places where God is described as relating to the unborn. He fashions them, Job 31, 15, and values them, Exodus 21. Such as to hurt a woman who's pregnant and to hurt that child inside the womb is serious before God. God fashions them and values them. He knows them, Jeremiah 1, 5, and relates to them, Psalm 22. God says to Jeremiah, before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I consecrated you. …

… I praise you because I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. In other words, our worth precedes any accomplishment or merit on our behalf. Long before your daddy had a wink in his eye, our creator redeemer predetermined that he would subscribe priceless value to you. There's nothing we earn. We just sang that. But I think for most of us, we can sing it, we can say it, but to grasp in a world that says you're only as valuable as your last performance in a world where we are entirely judged by how we perform and how much we produce. It is really hard for us to wrap our dinky human minds around the concept that this perfect, holy, Trinitarian God ascribed invaluable worth to us before anybody would have said we were worth anything. We hadn't done anything yet to be considered worthy. And yet David makes it clear before any of us breathed our first breath, our heavenly father said, worth. I'm ascribing worth to you. Flip forward to the book of Isaiah. I love Isaiah's prophecy. And Isaiah underscores this idea of predetermined worth and priceless value that God ascribes to us, Isaiah 43. …

I Left That Out | Jonathan Josephs

… I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you. when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God. How vast is the sum of them. Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, still I am with you. Search me, God, and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. see if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. Before I give you my title, would you just make David's words your prayer this morning? Would you just say, search me, God? Now say it to your father in heaven, say, search me, God. The title of my message today is I left that out. I left that out. …

… My soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. your eyes saw my unformed substance and your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them. David is saying, Lord, you have formed me. And not only have you formed me, you formed all of my days. He's saying, before I was conceived, conceived, before I emerged from the womb, before I lived out my days, including the days that are yet to come, all of them were written down according to Your sovereign will. It's a remarkable psalm. It's familiar to many of us, but don't lose the wonder, perhaps even the scandal of it, but it's good news for each of us with this psalm to say, Lord, You know me. Lord, You are with me. Lord, You have formed me and all of my days. …

… and it may be that you need a reset to understand my frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body, and all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. I'm created, but created by God. But why? For God. all things have been created by God and for God. So your main purpose, my main purpose in life is spiritual. Hello? Am I here? My main purpose is spiritual. I have stewardship over the temporal, but my main purpose is spiritual. when God knit me together in my mother's womb, he didn't say, you're going to be such a good communicator, and that is why I'm knitting you together. He said, no, I'm knitting you together for a relationship with me. So how do you boil all that down? It means that the goal of my life is to know God and to make him known. …

… something today that I think is really, really easy to understand but so difficult to apply. I'm going to be reading from Psalm 139, verses 7 through 17. This will be the foundation, and then I'll share a story from the Old Testament to illustrate this thought today that God gave me. Every sermon starts as a thought, so I want to talk to you about thoughts from a thought God gave me, which is, by the way, why I keep stacks of notebook paper all around my house. In case God gives me a thought, I need to be ready to catch it, just in case I can give it to you. This is so powerful. look at Psalm 139, David is speaking about the wonder of God. I was going to read only verse 17 to set up my thought, but I feel like it'll be so much more effective if I start at verse 7. So listen to this. The psalmist says, Everyone standing, please, for the Word of God, if you're physically able. Thank you. …
