… get to do literally whatever you want to do. go, Levi, I need a scripture for that. You didn't think we thought of that? Come on. Psalm 37, verse four. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and he shall give you the desires of your heart. Do you see the beauty of that? Look at it on the screen again. Delight yourself. Be so enamored with him. Be so smitten. Delight yourself also in the Lord. That is what your primary preoccupation is. I want to glorify you, Lord. I want to bring fame to the one who had his arms stretched on the cross for me. I want everything to point back to you. I'm so grateful. God, I'm just grateful for what you've done. I'm just aware that I couldn't save myself. I was a five o'clock hire. I didn't belong in your vineyard. You gave me a shot. You gave me a chance. I did not deserve the fatted calf. I did not deserve the robe you gave me. In fact, I deserve the opposite. I deserve wrath, but you gave me life. I deserve hell, but you gave me heaven. I deserve to be alone, but you gave me a family. …
… is anybody else like that or am i the only one all right all right so here we are dwell in the land feed on his faithfulness delight yourself also in the lord and he will give you the desires of your heart this is actually the verse when i thought about tonight that i felt would have the greatest importance for us Delight yourself in the Lord. It's interesting, if you look at the Greek language, and I just have the books. I'm not the smart guy in the languages. I just read the books. And what I noticed was the word joy actually has a root word. And the root word is rejoice. Let's put it this way, where does joy come from? Rejoicing. Let me try this side. I've got really good news for you. A lot of people wait for joy to come crashing in on their heart. And you can wait, because sometimes it happens. Or you can have it now. in the world we we did things because we felt like and in the kingdom we do it because it's right and in the kingdom feeling proceeds it follows action in the kingdom feelings follow actions in the world feelings precede actions And I feel like the Lord illustrated it in the language of scripture, is that the word joy actually comes from a root word that means to rejoice. …
… What am I supposed to do? Um, where, where am I supposed to be? Where is it that you would have me? Um, because too many of us make decisions right out of what we want, what we desire. And so if I'm really rooted in him, my desires become his desires. There's a scripture that says that, um, uh, help me. It just came, left my mind. Lord Jesus, the desires of your heart, he will give you the desires of your heart. But when you really seek God and he becomes your heart, he becomes your desire, then your desires change to match his. It's not the other way around. God doesn't say, okay, now I'm going to bless what it is that you want. He might. Right? He might. But he's like, hey, no, if you desire me, then he becomes the desire. And then you want to please him. It's not about what I want in my flesh and, you know, making sure that I'm happy. …
… This is epic. We hit Psalm 37 verse 4 last week, but this is the whole of it, or most of it. Do not fret because of evildoers. Translation, the actual word is, do not fret because of Gavin Newsom is actually the Hebrew word. I'm kidding. Maybe I'm not. nor be envious of the workers counting votes. No, just kidding. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass and wither as the green herb. Trust in the Lord and do good. Wow. Listen, no matter what the world does, people, we are to trust in the Lord and do good. Why? Because there are people who will do wickedly. Why? Because that's what they do. And that's what they're going to do until they come to Christ if they do. But look, we're not to point at them. We're to trust in the Lord and do good. Dwell in the land and feed on what? His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord and he shall give you the desires of your heart. …
… the dynamic of the Christian life. Write this down. It's not in your notes. It just popped into my head. Psalm 37 verse 4, delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Notice the prerequisite, delight yourself in God. Your heart will be changed and he will give you those desires. Why? Because they're God honoring desires placed there by him. And all the while you think you're being spoiled because God's answering all these wonderful things that you'd want to see happen in your life. And all the while God is saying, this is how you and I walk together. You seek me. I share things with you. You start asking for these things. I give them to you. And aren't we happy? Absolutely awesome. What a precious God. The second thing we see here about the way of wisdom, and it will save our lives is by wising up is that by being active. I think we know this already, but we need to repeat it. Solomon repeats it to his son, he says, yes, in verse 3, if you. So that is a challenge. If you do this, my son, you're going to have to do this. You got to be active about it. If you, watch, cry out for discernment. There's that awesome word. And lift up your voice for understanding. Verse 4, if you seek her as silver, that's wisdom, seek her, and search for her as for hidden treasures. …
… One of these verses they use is Psalm 37, 4. It says, delight yourself in the Lord. He will give you the desires of your heart. You're probably saying, oh my goodness. It's a get rich quick scheme. I figured it out. No, this verse right here is a promise of provision, not a promise of prosperity. God is talking about food, drink, clothing, daily needs, daily necessities. The covenant gospel tells you and I, hey, seek God and he will give you your desires. What is scripture telling us? What is God telling you and I? He's saying, seek me and you will not be ruled by the desires of your heart. Growing up, once a year for the first 16 years of my life, we had to travel down to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas for testing for my NF. And I remember vividly as a child sitting in the children's cancer wing playing with kids my own age. These kids were pale, they were frail, no hair on their heads, obviously going through cancer treatments, obviously going through chemo. …
… which means that you're going to have to die to your desire You've heard that passage, delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. It's one of the most misquoted, not one of the, it's an often misquoted passage because the notion there is that if you love God, then God will give you whatever is in your heart. That is not what that means. Because that contradicts what we're talking about. The heart is deceitful above all. It's desperately wicked. God loves you too much to give you something that's deceiving you. So when it says delight yourself in the Lord, watch this. It means delight in the Lord. Delight, desire God, and then God will appropriate your desire. He will cause you to desire what he wants to produce in your life. That's Philippians 2.13. It's God who works in us, who causes us. So it's that level of heart examination. that will ensure one of my disciplines to ensure that I have a good chance of having a healthy heart. …
… take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Take delight. Another version says, delight yourself in the Lord. The Hebrew word here is the word anag and it means to be made soft or pliable. It means to take delight in, to find joy, to deeply enjoy. Delight yourself in the Lord. Take delight in the Lord. Enjoy the Lord. He will give you the desires of your heart. Enjoy his presence. When you get to know him, you'll get to know his will. As you delight in him, as you enjoy him, you're made soft and pliable. As you're satisfied in him, he starts to change your heart. He puts his desires in you. And as you enjoy him, and as you get to know him, you start to want what he wants. He gives you the mind of Christ. The same spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells within you. And God promises that if you seek him, you will find him and he will direct your steps. …
… So many people misunderstand Psalm 37, which says, Delight yourself in the Lord, and He'll give you the desires of your heart. They think that means if I love Jesus, I can have a pink Cadillac. That isn't what that means. Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desire of your heart. When you delight in the Lord, the deepest needs of your heart will be met. The desire of your heart is Jesus. That's what your heart yearns for. That's what you were made for. For Him. The Bible says it is in Him that we live and move and have our being in Him. You'll never be satisfied apart from Him until you can say the Lord is my shepherd, Not what he gives me, but he himself. What did God make a fish to do? To swim in the sea. What did God make a bird to do? To fly in the sky. Now you take a fish out of the sea and put him in a tree, he'll be an unhappy fish. …
