… There is nothing but naked, open confession in a heart of repentance. Verse 10, create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. He doesn't expect something of the people around him. He doesn't expect another individual even to understand. He's getting it right with God. That's where we start in repentance. Then he comes in verse 17 to the verse I want to mention, develop. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Look closely at the verse. These are sacrifices. These are sacrifices that God finds pleasure in, a broken spirit and a contrite heart. I meditated on those thoughts quite a while and came up with a brief list of five characteristics of a contrite heart. I've observed this in others on a few occasions. I'm sorry it hasn't been on many but on a few occasions and I've experienced it myself on a few occasions a contrite heart number one nurses no grudges nurses no grudges contrite heart never says if it hadn't been for what sheep or if this hadn't happened then or because I was raised like I was raised then none of that a contrite heart nurses no grudges second makes no demands i don't come with a contrite heart demanding that you now do this in return so that leads me to the third contrite heart has no expectations i don't expect good treatment i don't expect to be treated …

You Have Nobody to Blame but Yourself
Jamal Bryant, 2026-04-19

… toleet because you are dealing with the enemy outside but never dealing with your demons on the inside. Create in me a clean heart, oh God, and renew a right spirit within me. You know the difference between right and wrong, but you just keep choosing what's wrong. God, it's me. It's me. It's me, oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer. It ain't my mother. It ain't my father. It's me, oh Lord. when are you going to stop blaming your baby daddy? When are you going to stop blaming your absent father? When are you going to stop blaming your two-faced friend? When are you going to stop blaming racists who have no imagination and realize some of the stuff that I'm in, I put myself in. But I'm thankful under God he gave me another chance. And I'm here today because he kept me. I'm here today because he looked beyond all of my fault. And he saw me at my knees. I wanted to ask you I don't know you like that I wanted to ask you how are you giving credit to people who are beneath you How are you giving them that much authority over your life, over your destiny, and over your future that somebody that weak could destroy your whole mindset? …

… Psalm 51, and this is what he says in Psalm 51. We said it together this last Wednesday, created me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. And it goes on, cast me not away from your presence and don't take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of my salvation. Because he was broken, because he'd allowed sin in. I'd end with this. The seven deadly sins, I always find it helpful to think about that. In the Old Testament, the greatest sin was idolatry. That is to worship something other than God as though it was God, the most important thing in your life, which is why the first commandment is, don't have any other gods before me. The second was to practice injustice. And for Jesus, you know, the most important commandment after loving God was to love your neighbor. And so to fail to love your neighbor was a serious sin. But the seven deadly sins also helped me think about, you know, where I might be struggling. …

Ash Wednesday - February 18, 2026
Rev. Dr. Jonah So, 2026-02-18 · Scripture reading

God of mercy, as we enter into Lent, may your spirit guide us to places we might not necessarily want to go. We turn to you because you, O Lord, have the words of life. Help us to hear what you have to say and grant us the courage to live it out. This we pray in Christ's name. Amen. repent and thou shall be saved. Is that what you came here to hear today? I mean, is life going well with you? When you look out at the world, is it as it should be? Do you find yourself crying out to God in fear or because of injustice? Do you hope that God would finally come and fix all that is broken? You wonder, when will the day of the Lord get here so that we can have peace and justice for all? be careful what you wish for the prophet Joel proclaims that the day of the Lord is coming and is near however he goes on to describe the day as one of darkness and gloom on that day there will be a great and powerful army but it is not to bring liberation and freedom to the oppressed. …

Put Your Passion In Its Place
Steven Furtick, 2026-02-09

… because my passion serves a purpose. Bow your head. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and renew a right spirit, and grant me a willing spirit." Somebody say, I will. I will. Say, I will. I will. I will. I will. I will. Even when I don't feel, I will, because I have a passion. I will. I will. I'm not waiting on the position. I have a passion. Father, we thank you today for returning us to our first love. We don't want to labor without love, and we don't want to serve you without passion. We don't want to lose our place. We don't want to miss our chance. So while the lampstand is still in place, while we still have breath in our bodies, we still have an opportunity. We call out to you, God, and we don't ask you to restore our passion because the fact is you didn't take it away. It's still in us. It was just waiting for this word, for this moment to be awakened. So, God, we call our passion to the surface like Elisha called the iron of the axe head to float to the top of the water. We're calling our passion forth today. …

It’s On Me
Jamal Bryant, 2025-12-21

… after you begin to pray Lord create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me I need you to make an announcement to everything that has been fighting you this year everything that's been trying to hold you back every obstacle that's been in your way I need you to clear your throat and shout, I'm about to create something. It don't matter what it is that they got against me. Before 2026 is over, I am going to create something. What are you waiting on? You got to build it. You got to write it. You got to plan it. You got to start it. You got to engineer it. You got to sketch it. You got to design it. You got to sew it. If you are anointed, you got to create something. You got to create something. In Luke chapter 1, it chronicles for us how God sent an angel to a teenage virgin named Mary and told her, you have found, I want you to see what it says, you have found great favor. Here's the shout, and the Lord is with you. …

FEAST: Five Prayers for Daily Bible Reading
Marshall Segal, 2025-07-19

… but he says, verse 10, create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. When I ask you, O God, to address my sin, I don't want you to just forgive my sin. I want you to rid me of my sin. I want it to be dead. For me, I don't want to wallow in self-pity like I do when I disappoint my wife. I can respond that way sometimes. When I don't do something that I said I was going to do. Or I communicate badly in a busy season. Or I don't step up and lead in some difficult situation in our life. I don't want to be like that. I want to be rid of those sins. And I can't kill those sins of self-pity and passivity and selfishness without God's help. I have to pray. God, address my sin. we put sin to death by the spirit. And so we turn Jesus's prayer for us in John 17, 17. …

The Book of 2 Samuel
Francis Chan, 2017-04-03

… Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. cast me not away from your presence, take not your Holy Spirit from me, restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise, for you will not delight in sacrifice or I would give it. You will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart, O God.
